Manchester City in a league of their own
Manchester City football club is all set to wrap up a nifty new signing north of the
Border on Friday (July 22).
The club\'s Life President, Bernard Halford, will be travelling to Selkirk in the Scottish
Borders to seal a deal that will see his Premiership outfit kick-off the new season in style - as the first English club to have its own official tartan.
The “Manchester Blues” tartan is scheduled to make its debut at a special launch event
on Friday evening and strengthens a longstanding association between the
textile town and the FA Cup winners.
It dates back to the 1950s when one of Selkirk\'s most famous sons, Bobby Johnstone,
became the first player to score in consecutive FA Cup finals at Wembley. He had
transferred to Manchester City from Hibernian where he was idolised as one of the
legendary \'famous five.*\'
Manchester Blues has been designed by Gerald Reilly, director of Selkirk based tartan
experts A S Campbell, which will manufacture and supply cashmere and lambswool
scarves, ties and stadium rugs on behalf of the club. The company has teamed up
with one of Europe’s biggest sporting merchandisers, www.Kit Bag.com, to bring the range to market.

The unique design has been trademarked and lodged with the Scottish Register of Tartans and the Scottish Tartans Authority to protect its exclusivity.
And with high profile names such as City manager Roberto Mancini and superstar
soccer fan Rod Stewart among those looking forward to wearing the new look
accessories Manchester Blues is on the way to scoring big time with fans.
Popularity and significant sales would not only be good news for Selkirk\'s standing in
the textile world but could open the door to important new markets.
The idea for a Manchester City tartan happened at a Burns Supper at Manchester
City Football Club last year. Craig Douglas, former chairman of Selkirk Football Club
presented guests with scarves made from another top A S Campbell tartan - the
Guardian of Scotland, commemorating William Wallace’s historic
apppointment at the Kirk o’ the Forest in Selkirk.
“Roberto Mancini wore one of our scarves on the night and one thing led to another
and the idea for Manchester Blues tartan was born. Craig took the idea to his friend
Bernard Halford who, along with Mike Summerbee, presented it to the board and it
was approved.
“Tartan is timeless and when I saw the pallet of Manchester City colours sent to me
by the club I knew they would work beautifully. The results are simply stunning. I am
absolutely sure that this product will confirm Scotland and the Scottish Borders world
class reputation for designing and producing the finest quality cashmere and
lambswool fabrics in the world,” said Gerald.
